Canada's New Menswear Revolution: Meet Hank, the Brand Filling the Premium Retail Gap (2026)

Canada's menswear retail scene is about to get a much-needed boost with the introduction of Hank, a new men's retail concept by Caulfeild Apparel Group. With a rich history dating back to 1886, Caulfeild is now venturing into the retail space, aiming to fill a significant gap in the market. The company's fourth-generation operator, Mike Purkis, is a veteran in the apparel industry, having previously taken ownership of brands like Joe Boxer in Canada. Now, he's assembled a dream team of menswear experts to create Hank, a carefully curated retail experience.

What makes Hank unique is its focus on helping customers build a wardrobe that will last. Purkis emphasizes the importance of speed to market and execution, a lesson learned from his family's retail legacy. The team, led by Sanjay Malhotra and Patrick Tier, includes Lanita Layton, a seasoned professional with a successful track record in expanding retail brands like Hugo Boss. Together, they've crafted a compelling product mix, blending national brands such as Boss, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Nudie Jeans Co. with private labels like Caulfeild 1886 and Benson.

The retail concept is designed to cater to a specific demographic: a confident, 25- to 55-year-old man who values quality and style. The stores will offer a mix of tailored clothing and sportswear, with an emphasis on helping customers build a stable wardrobe. Hank's stores will be strategically located in Bayview Village, Upper Canada Mall, and Masonville, with an e-commerce site launching soon. The average store size is 1,700 square feet, and the team aims to expand to 20 to 30 stores within the next year, with a long-term goal of 30 to 40 doors.

One of the most intriguing aspects of Hank is its name, which Purkis explains as a nod to the traditional coil of yarn called a hank. This name represents the brand's target customer and the idea of building a wardrobe that will last for decades. While Hank's initial focus is on the Canadian market, there's potential for expansion into the U.S. in the future. Purkis believes that Hank will fill a critical void in the menswear retail landscape, offering a unique and curated shopping experience that caters to the needs of modern Canadian men.
